New COVID-19 vaccine boosters, the flu shot and MPX vaccines -- updates from Keck Medicine of USC

Dear Valued Patient,

We want to share important updates impacting the health of you and your family.

Updated COVID-19 vaccine boosters are available

Updated COVID-19 vaccine boosters, called bivalent boosters, are now available. These new boosters provide broad protection against COVID-19, including better protection against the Omicron variant.

The FDA has authorized emergency use of Pfizer’s bivalent booster shots for those 12 and older and Moderna’s bivalent boosters for those 18 and older, as long as it has been at least two months since individuals received either a primary or booster vaccination. Additionally, to be eligible for an updated booster, you also must have already received your primary dose(s) of the vaccine.

Those who have been recently infected with COVID-19 can wait three months before receiving the updated booster.

Keck Medicine is now offering bivalent boosters at the USC Medical Plaza Pharmacy, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at the USC Verdugo Hills Professional Pharmacy in Glendale, Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Walk-ins are accepted, or you can make an appointment here. For your convenience, you can click here to complete the intake form prior to your visit.

Additionally, pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid offer bivalent boosters.

It’s time for your annual flu shot

The Centers for Disease Control recommends everyone six months and older (with rare exceptions) receive an annual flu vaccine, ideally by the end of October before flu season peaks. This year’s flu vaccine covers the strains most likely to affect the United States. There are also three vaccines specifically recommended for individuals 65 and older.

We offer flu shots at both the USC Medical Plaza Pharmacy and USC Verdugo Hills Professional Pharmacy. You can book an appointment here.

Flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be administered at the same time.

Free MPX (also known as monkeypox), flu and COVID-19 vaccine clinic opens near Dodger Stadium

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has recently expanded eligibility requirements for the MPX vaccine.

The USC School of Pharmacy, in cooperation with city and county organizations, is offering no-cost vaccines for MPX, influenza and COVID-19 (including bivalent boosters) to the public. Vaccines are available Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., at Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center parking lot, 1700 Stadium Way, Los Angeles, 90012.

Registration is recommended, but a limited number of walk-ins will be accommodated. You can register here.

You can also make an appointment for MPX and COVID-19 vaccines at other locations through My Turn.

We’ve changed our hospital visitor policy

We have updated our visitor policy at Keck Hospital of USC and USC Norris Cancer Hospital because we know that visitors are an important part of the care and recovery process. Among the changes, patients can now have two visitors at a time. You can view our new guidelines here.

As we leave summer behind and move into the fall, we wish you and your family a happy and healthy transition into the new season.
